Yüzde birlik puan kaybını da asla A yani tam not vermeyen büyük usta Greg Hopkins’e borçluyuz!

“First Night at Newbury Street”, “Only for a Little While”, “Hope” ve “Bluespect”. Bu eserlerin arkasındaki felsefeyi biraz açabilir misin?

Bu dörtleme benim farklı müzikal arayışlarımı temsil ediyor. “First Night at Newbury Street”, saksafon dörtlüsü için yazdığım, caz doğaçlaması ile atonal çağdaş müziği harmanlayan bir iş oldu. “Only for a Little While” ise Berklee sahnesindeki bir performans sırasında canlı kaydedilen bir caz baladı.

A Versatile Talent from İzmir to the Berklee Stage: Rasih Öztürk on Music, Education, and the Future

We sat down with Rasih Öztürk, who made a name for himself in the İzmir music scene at a young age, went on to graduate from Berklee College of Music with highest honors, and is now based in Boston making music and mentoring the next generation of artists. We had a great conversation covering everything from his debut album Early Bird to his modern harmony textbook, his project with Esperanza Spalding, and his plans for the future. Allow me to introduce you to Rasih Öztürk..

I know you started playing music at a very young age and stepped onto professional stages when you were only 14 or 15 alongside your mentor, Mustafa Kamçıcı. How did getting that kind of stage experience so early shape your musical vision?

Performing on stage with Mustafa Kamçıcı at that age was an invaluable education for me. Gaining early recognition as an active musician in the İzmir music scene really boosted my confidence. Winning “Best Bassist” myself and “Best Original Composition” with my band at the Turkey High School Music Competition at American Collegiate Institute —where the jury included names like Özkan Uğur, Sina Koloğlu, Raci Pişmişoğlu, and İskender Türsen—was fantastic validation during those high school years. Performing and leading bands became the center of my life throughout high school, spanning everything from theater productions to memorial ceremonies. As I bounced between guitar, bass, and keys, I realized that I owed becoming a versatile musician to my passion for the stage and for music itself.

How did you transition from being a performer to focusing on composition and theory? I read that Anıl Altınsoy from Dokuz Eylül University was a major turning point in your life.

Absolutely. One day, Anıl Altınsoy heard me improvising and said, “You play so melodically—why not become a composer?” His perspective and guidance really deepened my interest in music theory, composition, and arranging. I started writing my own music when I was 16. Back then, I actually developed a specific method for myself: I would imitate my favorite guitarists for six months, and then write an original piece in their style. My debut album, Early Bird, which I released in 2020, was the product of that method from my teenage years. All the tracks on that album were written back then as homages to those guitarists.

You also have a strong background in arranging and producing. How did you connect with Sina Koloğlu, a founding member of Bulutsuzluk Özlemi and a veteran of the industry?

Well, Sina Kologlu was actually on the jury at the high school competition I mentioned earlier where I won an award, so that’s where we first met. Years later, our paths crossed again. When he called me and asked me to be his arranger and producer, I was thrilled. The first result of our collaboration was the single “Mevhibe,” released in 2022. It’s a very special partnership for me.

And while we’re on the subject, I’m happy to share that we have new projects in the works set to be released in the coming months.

That’s awesome news, we can’t wait to hear them! Before we talk about your other upcoming projects, I want to ask: your journey to the States started at McNally Smith and turned into an incredible success story at Berklee. That story began with the Arif Mardin Scholarship—one of the most prestigious awards in the music world—and continued with you graduating Summa Cum Laude in just a year and a half with a 3.99 GPA out of 4.00. Could you walk us through that whole process?

At age 20, I was accepted to McNally Smith College of Music with a 50% scholarship and tested out of 12 courses, but I had to return to Turkey when the school closed. I didn’t pause my musical journey when I got back; I performed in concerts with my own group, the “Rasih Öztürk Quartet,” as well as numerous shows featuring my wife, Nisa Benna, on vocals. After that, I had the chance to perform at concerts and a festival with ‘Kaygı,’ a group led by Armağan Sönmez and formed by highly esteemed musicians such as Yavuz Darıdere, Okay Aynur, Oktay Aynur, and Canay Cengen. That band was essentially Turkey’s unofficial music academy, and those gigs helped me hone my craft.

The major turning point came in 2021 when I won the full-ride Arif Mardin Scholarship, awarded by the American Turkish Society, for Berklee College of Music’s summer program. Due to the pandemic, it was deferred for a year. During that time, my wife Nisa Benna—who has been my musical partner and student since high school—won the exact same scholarship. So in 2022, we moved to the U.S. together. At the end of that summer program, I auditioned and won a full scholarship worth nearly $300,000 to complete my undergraduate degree at Berklee. Studying jazz harmony, composition, guitar, and big band arranging under legendary figures like Steve Rochinski, Jeff Claassen, Greg Hopkins, and Sal DiFusco was an extraordinary experience.

And that hundredth-of-a-point loss on my GPA? We owe that to the great master Greg Hopkins, who never gives out straight A’s! Let’s just say that was the price of studying under a legend who worked closely with the likes of Frank Sinatra and Buddy Rich…

While you were at Berklee, you were also teaching, right? How is your work as an educator continuing in Boston today?

Yes, during my time as a student, I worked as a certified tutor in the Core Music Tutoring program, which covers the foundational music courses required for all majors at the school. Every year, I prepare students for Berklee’s summer programs, undergraduate, and graduate programs, and they all receive full or high-percentage scholarships. I currently live in Boston, where I continue to write curricula and teach guitar, bass, theory, songwriting, composition, ensemble classes, and college prep programs at Guitar Corner Music School.

In June and July of 2026, you released four fantastic original compositions in quick succession: “First Night at Newbury Street”, “Only for a Little While”, “Hope”, and “Bluespect”. Could you tell us a bit about the concept behind these pieces?

This tetralogy represents my different musical explorations. “First Night at Newbury Street” is a piece I wrote for a saxophone quartet that blends jazz improvisation with contemporary atonal music. “Only for a Little While” is a jazz ballad recorded live during a performance on the Berklee stage. “Hope” is a Da Capo Aria I composed based on Emily Dickinson’s famous poem, featuring my wife Nisa Benna on vocals and my former student Yusuf Akarslan—another Arif Mardin Scholarship recipient—on piano. Finally, “Bluespect” is an original jazz quartet piece inspired by the innovations brought to the traditional blues form by post-bop masters like Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter.

My dear friend Yağız Polat, who actively works with leading Turkish artists like Redd, Adamlar, Ajda Pekkan, and Yaşar, handled the mixing and mastering for these projects. There are at least two more singles on the way. I actually composed one of these singles, ‘Die Übermensch,’ as a tribute to my mentor at Berklee, Steve Rochinski—a true Renaissance man and an instructor who completely revolutionized my approach to music.

There was a recent development that generated a lot of buzz: a project with 5-time Grammy-winning legend Esperanza Spalding was on the table, but it fell through at the last minute. How did that leave you feeling, and what can we look forward to next?

The project came about after a close faculty friend at Berklee recommended me to Esperanza. Having it canceled was, of course, a big disappointment and bittersweet. But the musical journey doesn’t stop. I’m currently working on 2 or 3 new singles set for release in the coming months, as well as the album Rasih Öztürk & Friends – Live at Berklee.

What’s most important to me right now is working on a comprehensive, roughly 600-page harmony textbook and a five-volume ear training series that I believe will bring a fresh perspective to contemporary music education. One of my main goals for the near future is to return strong to academia by pursuing a doctorate in music theory and composition. I’ll continue working, producing, and mentoring talented students from both my home country and all around the world without breaking stride.

I’ll keep following your journey with great pride. Until we meet again in the States…
